About the Show

Set in the late 1960s, Plaza Suite is a comedy about three unique couples who each stay in the same luxury suite at New York’s famous Plaza Hotel, along with the stories of the hotel’s staff. This play was BurlOak Theatre group’s first production back in 1976, and now returns to Oakville for the first time since then to commemorate BOTG’s 50th anniversary this season.

Rehearsals to begin weekly in October 2026, and up to 3x weekly beginning in late November. All rehearsals will be at the BOTG Studio in Oakville, Ontario. Specific days and rehearsal times will be scheduled with contributions from the cast. Open auditions are welcome to anyone 18 years and older. All roles with BurlOak Theatre Group are volunteer and non-paying.

Character Breakdown

Principal Roles:
Six actors will each play one character of one of the play’s three central couples, each starring in one act of the show. All of these parts are best suited for experienced actors and/or comedians comfortable with long, continuous scenes. Performers in these roles should be comfortable on stage for up to 45-50 minutes with no break and memorizing between 350-500 lines.

  • KAREN NASH (Female, plays 40-55yrs.) A New York socialite and wife to Sam Nash. Extroverted and a great storyteller, she’s staying at the hotel to celebrate her wedding anniversary. She’s observant and has a great memory, and determined to re-kindle the fading spark in her marriage.

  • SAM NASH (Male, plays 40-55yrs.) A successful business leader in New York City. On the verge of turning 50, he’s well-dressed and looks great for his age. He’s celebrating his anniversary to Karen at the hotel. A confident and kind man, who’s also reserved and no-nonsense.

  • JESSE KIPLINGER (Male, plays 30-45yrs.)

  • A Hollywood movie producer who grew up in the New York suburbs, he’s back visiting town for work. A smooth-talking ladies man and childhood friends to Muriel. He’s a bit disorganized but extremely charming.

  • MURIEL TATE (Female, plays 30-45yrs.)

  • A childhood friend of Jesse, she’s lived around New York her whole life but visiting the Plaza hotel for the first time. Middle to lower class, she’s pleasant but a bit shy, and unsure of what to make of seeing her friend Jesse for the first time in over a decade.

  • ROY HUBLEY (Male, plays 50-65yrs.) Norma’s husband and father of bride-to-be Mimsey, he’s here for the wedding in the hotel ballroom. Equally gruff and loving, he doesn’t like being flustered. He’s determined to make sure the wedding goes on, and to talk Mimsey out of her cold feet.

  • NORMA HUBLEY (Female, plays 50-65yrs.) Roy’s wife and mother of bride-to-be Mimsey, she’s also here for the wedding. She’s calm and first meticulous then a bit desperate in keeping Roy in check. Norma is determined to see Mimsey goes through with marrying Borden.

To audition for any of the above roles, please come on your audition date prepared with a contemporary monologue (published after 1950) of any style, 1-2mins in length, preferably memorized. You may also be asked to do a cold read of the text.

Additional Speaking Roles:
An additional five roles are for characters featured in one or more of the three central plots of the show, though with notably less stage time and fewer lines.

  • JEAN McCORMACK (Female, plays 25-40yrs.) Sam Nash’s secretary and personal assistant. Detailed, professional and warm. She’s suspected of trying to have an affair with Sam.

  • BELLHOP (Male, plays 25-35yrs.) One of the more likeable and personable employees at the hotel. He works for the
concierge and assists guests checking in and checking out. Endlessly patient.

  • MIMSEY HUBLEY (Female, 22-25yrs.) Bride to be and Borden’s fiancée. Daughter of Roy and Norma, she’s having cold feet
on her wedding day and has locked herself in the bathroom of her hotel suite. While scared, she really does love Borden.

  • BORDEN (Male, 22-25yrs.) Groom of the wedding and Mimsey’s fiancé. He’s laid-back and definitely marrying up into higher society. He genuinely loves Mimsey.

  • WAITER (Male, 30+yrs.) A tired member of the hotel staff who works with room service. He’s over his job here, but puts on a kind face for the guests.

To audition for any of these roles, a prepared contemporary monologue (published after 1950) of any style up to 2mins is preferred but not mandatory. Memorization is also preferred, but not mandatory. You may also be asked to do a cold read of the text as part of your audition, and those without prepared monologues will be asked to perform cold readings.

Ensemble Performers:
Lastly, several additional performers (between 8-12 additional actors of any age and gender) will be cast to play other guests and staff of the hotel. This group is led by the CONCIERGE of the hotel (Male, age 40+), and features a large, varied ensemble of non-speaking characters.

All performers in the ensemble may be cast from initial auditions. Another round of ensemble-only auditions will take place in fall 2026. Applicants who are only interested in this non-speaking ensemble do not need to audition at this time; a second audition call will be posted later this year.
