AUDITIONS

Rehearsals to begin weekly in December 2023, and 3x weekly beginning January 2024.
Regular rehearsals are expected to be Tuesday and Thursday nights and Sunday
afternoons (to be confirmed.). All rehearsals will be at the BOTG Studio at 1200 Speers Road, Unit 7 in Oakville.

 

For all roles and characters, Burloak Theatre Group is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment. Furthermore, we are particularly interested in casting actors from a wide range of races, cultures and backgrounds. All parts are flexible in our casting of the show.
 

On this production, general auditions are open to anyone age 14 and older. Children younger than this age minimum interested in a specific character in this show are invited  to directly email the producers to inquire about volunteer opportunities onstage and off.

In-Person Auditions
 

Individual auditions slots are a ten minutes each and must be booked in advance. Please arrive at least 15 minutes in advance.

For the audition, please email current headshot (black/white is fine) and acting resume in advance to vp@botg.ca
Please dress comfortably and familiarize yourself with the play and its characters in advance.

 

For the audition:
- Please prepare an up tempo music theatre song 1-2mins in length.
- Those auditioning as a principal should prepare a second, contrasting song.
- Songs will be to a backing track or a cappella.
- You will also participate in a 45min dance call before or after.
- You may also be asked to do a cold read of the text.

 

All auditionees will also participate in a 45min group dance call on the same calendar day as their individual audition. There is only one dance call per day, and times differ each date. Specific times each date can be seen above. Please come dressed in clothes you can move in comfortably and wearing athletic shoes.
 

Callbacks, if needed, will be set for Wednesday, Sept. 27th from 7:30-9:30pm. Those asked for a callback will be notified on or before Monday, Sept. 25th.
 

PRINCIPAL ROLES
 

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS (Male, age 16-35, Tenor voice with belt)
A sea sponge, fry cook, adventurer and endless optimist. Cheery and boundlessly
energetic, polite, friendly, and sometimes clumsy. A challenging part for a high-stamina performer with exceptional acting, singing, dancing and comedy talents. Gymnastics and/or the ability to play any musical instruments an asset. Strong pop/rock voice.

 

PATRICK STAR (Male, age 20-35, Tenor voice)
A pink sea star. Spongebob’s best friend and neighbour. Clueless and dumb with
unbridled innocence. Playful, fun, bumbling. An exceptional singer, actor and comedian. Deadpan hum
our and some dance ability an asset.
 

SANDY CHEEKS (Female, age 20-40, Mezzo/Alto voice)
Originally from Texas, USA, Sandy is a squirrel who now lives underwater in a space
suit. She’s a brilliant rocket scientist and black belt in karate. Close friend to Spongebob and Patrick. She has difficulty being accepted by her undersea neighbours. A skilled singer/dancer with a country/blues/rock voice mix and speaks with southern accent.
**Note: Only BIPOC or non-caucasian identifying performers may apply for this role.

 

SQUIDWARD TENTACLES (Male, age 25-50, Tenor voice)
A teal blue octopus. An under appreciated musician working as a fast food cashier 
under Mr. Krabs. He’s also Spongebob and Patrick’s neighbour, easily annoyed by both of them. A show-stopping actor, singer and dancer. Tap dancing and/or ability to play clarinet an asset. Challenging costume demands for this role.

 

MR. KRABS (Male, age 35-60, Baritone voice)
A red crab; he’s the owner of the Krusty Krab fast food restaurant, boss to Spongebob and Squidward, and Pearl’s father. He has the voice and demeanour of a hardened sailor. A skilled singer and actor.

 

PLANKTON (Any gender, age 30-55, Tenor/Baritone or Alto voice)
A literal plankton. Owner of a less successful restaurant in Bikini Bottom. Plankton is an evil genius who wants to take over the town, married to Karen the computer. He’s smart but unlucky. A skilled actor, singer and comedian. Rap music and break dance an asset.

 

PEARL KRABS (Female, age 15-25, Soprano/Mezzo voice with belt)
Pearl is a whale and daughter to Mr. Krabs. She’s your typical teenage whale daughter, but she has dreams of being a rock star instead of taking over her Dad’s business. A huge fan of The Electric Skates rock band. Pearl is an exceptional rock singer with belt and a skilled actor and dancer.

 

KAREN (Female, age 30-55, Mezzo-Soprano voice)
Karen is a walking, sentient computer. Married to Plankton, she assists (and sometimes is more helpful in) evil schemes, but she’s less interested in being “evil.” A skilled actor and comedian with minimal solo singing and dance. Beatboxing an asset for this role.

 

ADDITIONAL ROLES (Listed alphabetically)
 

THE ELECTRIC SKATES (1 male role, 2 any gender, age 18-35, varying voices)
Three roles. Three fish who make up the boy rock band The Electric Skates. They are the most popular rock band in the ocean; think of the aquatic Rolling Stones. All actors are exceptional rock singers and skilled dancers. Any and all additional talents are an asset, including playing an instrument, cycling, skateboarding, rollerblading, or any stunt sport. These roles are for versatile, multi-talented performers.

 

FRENCH NARRATOR (Male, any age, non-singing)
Directly from the TV show, he is an omnipotent narrator offstage with a thick French
accent. A skilled comedian. This actor plays additional ensemble roles.

 

GARY THE SNAIL (Any gender, age 15-25, non-singing)
Spongebob’s cute pet snail named Gary. He only says “Meow”. Potentially a puppet.
This performer could potentially play additional ensemble roles.

 

LARRY THE LOBSTER (Male, any age, any voice)
A tall, larger than life lobster and surfer dude in Bikini Bottom, who eventually works as a bouncer and security guard. A skilled singer and dancer.

 

MAYOR OF BIKINI BOTTOM (Female, age 35-55, Soprano/Mezzo voice)
She’s the mayor of Bikini Bottom. A pleasant, respected, polished fish who commands attention. Much of the plot finds her way out of her league. A skilled actor and singer.

 

MRS. PUFF (Female, age 40+, any voice)
A pufferfish and local driving instructor. A skilled actor, comedian and dancer. This 
actress could potentially play additional ensemble roles.

 

OLD MAN JENKINS (Male, age 50+, any voice)
A elderly fish who is kind but impatient and easily frightened. A loveable grump. This
actor is a skilled physical comedian.

 

PATCHY THE PIRATE (Any gender, age 25-50, Baritone or Alto voice)
A pirate from Encino, California. Wears an impressive pirate costume. They are the 
president of the Spongebob Fan Club. A highly skilled singer and improv comedian. This performer plays additional ensemble roles.

 

PERCH PERKINS (Male, age 25+, Baritone/Bass voice)
A tuna fish who is the lead anchor of the local news. A deep, calm, rich voice. A highly skilled comedian, singer and actor.

 

 

ENSEMBLE TRACKS (Listed alphabetically)
 

All parts listed below double as chorus members playing fish, pirates, sea anemones, jellyfish, sardines and various other undersea creatures.
 

BUSTER BLUETANG (Any gender, any age, any voice)
A bluetang fish who lives in Bikini Bottom. A highly skilled singer and dancer. This

performer plays additional ensemble roles.
 

FRENCH NARRATOR’S FISH (2 any gender roles, any age, non-singing)
Two fish who assist with prop comedy and transitions throughout the shows, working at the instructions of the French Narrator. Skilled actors, dancers and physical comedians.

 

FOLEY ARTIST (Any gender, any age, non-singing)
An on stage sounds effects artist who makes cartoonish sounds as they occur
throughout the show. Experience with sound effects and improv comedy an asset.

 

JOHNNY THE BARTENDER (Any gender, any age, non-singing)
Johnny is a fish and a bartender. This performer plays additional ensemble roles.

 

SARDINE CULT LEADER (Male, any age, Tenor voice with belt)
A sardine who mistakes Patrick Star as a religious leader. Excellent gospel rock singer. This performer plays additional ensemble roles.

 

SARDINE SINGERS (2 female roles, any age, Soprano-Alto voices with belt)
Two roles. Other sardines who become followers of Patrick Star. Excellent gospel rock singers and skilled dancers. These women both play additional ensemble roles.

 

SECURITY GUARD #1 (Female, age 40+, any voice)
An actor posing as the head usher of the theatre. This performer plays additional 
ensemble roles.

 

SECURITY GUARD #2 (Any gender, age 40+, any voice)
An actor posing as the theatre’s security guard. This performer plays additional
ensemble roles.

 

TEENAGE FAN (Any gender, age 15-20, any voice)
A wild, screaming fan of The Electric Skates. The biggest fan. This performer plays
additional ensemble roles.


Up to twelve more roles of varying ages, genders and voices may be cast to play
various undersea creatures in the ensemble.
